Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, which allows them to focus on more complex tasks. Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters is built and enhanced.

Woods CERT Team Visits County Emergency Operations Centers (EOC)

Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas' office generously invited The Woods CERT Team to participate in a tour of the County Emergency Operations Centers (EOC) for LA County and the American Red cross on September 6, 2019, as part of Emergency Preparedness Month. Participants in the event from around the county were transported to the sites by bus and spent all day being briefed on the centers.

Participants from the Woods CERT Team were Jim Phillips, Bill VanDatta and Jimmie Mitchell.

The County EOC, located in East Los Angeles, is the central location where all County departments and possibly cities will gather in a room set up to communicate, provide status and develop action plans for all areas of the County in an emergency.

The American Red Cross EOC, similar to the LA County EOC and located in Downtown LA, has the ability to communicate with all locations where teams are deployed and track teams as they are relocated from one emergency site to another.

All participants agreed that the event was highly informative and helped us to understand what coordination is taking place during an emergency.

CERT Mock Disaster Drill held on May 4, 2019

The Woods Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) conducted a Mock Disaster Drill on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the oil site at the corner of Ashbridge Drive and Pasatiempo Lane. The event was also attended by other interested Woods residents.

We were extremely lucky to have two LA County Firefighter Paramedics attend the mock disaster and provide valuable suggestions and critique during the day.

The team demonstrated our emergency equipment and explained the fundamentals of command post and triage operation. The team then played out a training and demonstration scenario involving an earthquake and Search and Rescue operations.

Future events are planned, and the community will be notified.

The CERT Team thanks the residents that attended the mock disaster and for participating in the scenario as volunteers and for assisting with the breakdown and re-storage of the equipment.

Woods CERT Committee Volunteers Needed

The Woods CERT Committee is in need of volunteers to get involved in your community CERT Committee or to volunteer to participate in mock disasters. Many members have moved out of the area and participation is running short.

Completion of CERT training is not required, just a desire to support your community. If interested in participating, please contact the CERT Committee.
